Lucky's Room Budget Breakdown: An Update

Here is an update to this post from last week about our intended budget for Lucky's Room Redesign.

Our initial budget gave us $425 to make/purchase a long list of items for her room.  We also added $95 to that initial number by selling a few items on Craigslist this week.  These pieces of decor looked marvelous in our old home, but they didn't work in our new house.  (I paid $130 total for these items initially, so I didn't feel awful about making $95 on the sale.)

So our new running budget is $520 which makes me feel much more comfortable:)

Here is our updated 'Items to Purchase or Make' List:

The Winner is ......

Tami!  She was closest when she guessed that my purchases from last week Friday's power hour of shopping rang up to $22.35.



Her guess was actually more than double what I paid though.  I still owe you a real high five, neighbor Tami!

Aquafresh Training Toothpaste= $2.49-$1 Walgreens coupon and $1 Manufacturer Coupon= $0.49

Checking Off the Chair

One of the items on our 'Lucky's Room To Buy/Make List' is a desk chair.  Well, look what we stumbled upon in our attic when were up there doing some premature spring cleaning (Premature cleaning because it just snowed a couple inches Tuesday night, so spring is still teasing us.  Boo.):

It's an old office chair that we grabbed when an office was closing up shop for the cost of $0.  We actually have 4 total.  We reupholstered two of them last year.

Now remember the floral fabric from this post?  We put it to use a couple nights ago after the kiddos were in bed.

All in all, it took us 4 DVR'd episodes of Scrubs to get the job done.  We tackled the chair...and we won!!  Check it off our list!

Toys R Us Dealio

Check out this deal I got at Toys R Us yesterday:

I bought 4 VTech Toys regularly priced at $19.99.  They were on sale buy one get one free.  Now that's a great deal all by itself, but there have been lots of $5 off a $19.99 VTech Toy purchase coupons in the Sunday papers and online.

I purchased 4 toys and used four $5 off coupons on top of the 'buy one get one free' sale that was going on.  My total for all four toys ended up being $20 plus tax.  Not too shabby....that's 75% off, and now I've got a nice birthday party stash:).

I also picked up a couple of these Color Wonder kits which were on sale buy one get one free as well.  They were $8.99 each regularly, but with the sale and two $1 off coupons from a Sunday coupon insert, I paid $7 for two kits.  I love these for the car, and we have a couple long road trips coming up this summer, so I'm storing these until then.

Headboard Happiness

Remember when I wrote about the Jenny Lind bed that got away?  Well, we decided that we will continue looking for my dream bed for Lucky, but in the meantime, we'd like to try something fun and cheap for her room!

We used this tutorial from Sherry and John at Young House Love and made an upholstered headboard for the Lucky Girl.

Since we are passing the daybed she had been using on to another home, we needed to track down a twin bed frame.  It was easy to find one on Craigslist for the low price of $10.  Ironically, the little girl that had been using our new bed frame shares the same first name as Lucky.  How cool is that? 

Next up, I chose the size of headboard I wanted to make and picked up canvas stretching frame pieces from a local art store.  A twin size mattress is 39" wide and since the frame pieces were available in even numbers, I decided upon a 40" width.  As for the height, I wanted a big ol' headboard, so I chose to make it 60" tall. 

I picked up some batting and this fabric which coordinates nicely with her new bedding:

It was a very easy project, as we just followed the steps in the Sherry and John's tutorial.  We glued the pieces of the frame together, let it dry and then stapled the batting on the frame:

Next, we lined up the patterned fabric as best we could and stapled around the frame in a 6 o'clock, 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 9 o'clock pattern so the fabric wouldn't veer off center.  The stapling of the batting and fabric took at most 20 minutes.

Compared to $37.98 for this universal bed frame from Sam's Club that is the cheapest new frame we could find in stock locally.

 

For $1 more, our custom bed is a no brainer!

A Lucky Night Stand

Look what Lucky and I found at Goodwill last week for $10.80 (we received a 10% discount off of its original $11.99 price tag for taking it with us immediately vs. picking it up later):

It is a super cute, heavy night stand that will be perfect in Lucky's new room!  We're going to start out using it as is, but it may end up being painted a fun color in the future.  We're slowly, but surely pulling things together for our little girl's room.
