My Souvenirs!

Last week, we flew to Florida and enjoyed wonderful family time with both sides of our family.  We stayed at my father-in-law's condo and also got to spend a good chunk of time with my parents and siblings and Baby Cici too!  It was a wonderfully relaxing week, and I'm sure I'll be making a post of vacation pictures once I have the chance to go through the huge file of photos:)!

In the meantime, here are the souvenirs I picked up while on vacation purchased almost entirely at....World Market.  I just love that store.  I wish I had bigger suitcases:)!  (Most of the items I purchased couldn't be found online, although I did provide a link for the one that could.)

Wood Colored Pencils
World Market
$7.99

Fish Tambourine
World Market
Clearance $4.98

Ceramic Measuring Spoons
World Market
$2.99
(Slowly but surely, we're eliminating plastic from the ol' kitchen.)

World Market
$23.99 On Sale
(They had a larger size that was on sale for $31.99 that I would have preferred, but it was HUGE and it was questionable if it would have fit in my suitcase, so I settled for this cute smaller scale version.)

Chalkboard Birds on a String
World Market
$7.99 On Sale
(This purchase will be much more exciting once it's out of the package:).  And it would be easily DIY-able, but I imagine the cost would come close to $8 anyway!)

The coolest shell ever
Bonita Beach Shop
$2.99

I can't wait to start using these vacation finds!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

I decided to add a fun, little festive touch to our dining room for the big day of love:

It's a gumball machine that I've had for years and years.  It has not had anything in it for at least 5 years.  I decided to clean it up, take out the coin mechanism, fill it with festive M&M's, and I'm hoping what I have is a perfect motivator for 2 year old potty training time!

Wish us luck:)!!

And our kids will be receiving some very green Valentine's Day presents this year:

Practical, no??:)  Does it matter that I was planning on buying a back up glass water bottle and stainless silverware set for each of them anyway?  No.  They are going to love their surprises anyway!!  (The reusable bags were on clearance for $0.50 each from Target.  They will be perfect for our toy grocery store in the basement!)

P.S.  Sorry for the dark pictures!  I didn't get around to taking these until late-ish last night because we were gone last week.  Want to know where we were?  Here's a hint...

More later.

Coffee Table Journals

It wasn't long after reading this post from Jen at IHeart Organizing, that I stumbled upon this deal posted on one of my favorite money saving blogs, Hip2Save.  I was able to order two journals for FREE plus the cost of shipping from Paper Coterie.  (It ended up costing $10 for two journals.)  I just love the idea of having an easily accessible place to write about the daily things that happen around here.

As you can imagine, our books are filling up fast!  If I see this deal come up again, I'll be sure to order 2 more ...one for each kiddo next time!

Here are a few recent entries:

My Favorite Charmisms:
"Let's go Puper (Super) Fast!"
Belly Button, please!  (Some kids like their pacifiers or have a favorite toy.  Charm just likes my belly button.)
"Me Captain Barnacles!"
"Lucky, save me!" (When I tried to scoop him up for a diaper change.)

At music class this week, our teacher asked Lucky if she could tell the class what a shadow was.  Without pausing for even a second, Lucky simply said, "It's a reflection of yourself."  Seriously?  She's 4.  I'd have to think long and hard to come up with such a clear and concise explanation.  The teacher paused at Lucky's response and said, "Wow.  Great vocabulary, Lucky!"

2/1/2012
Out of nowhere, Lucky said to me:  "Mommy, there are three things we can't see: germs, God and Santa."  Yes, you're right dear.

Update 2/2/2012  After a discussion with Daddy about how a radio works, Lucky has determined that there are in fact 4 things that we can't see: radio waves, germs, God and Santa."

My Birthday Wish List...

...that is almost a full month early, Bill!!  My birthday is coming up next month, and although we don't typically get too excited about gifting each other with big presents for our birthdays (ie: We count things we purchased recently as our birthday and Christmas gifts to each other.  For example, Bill got a new LED TV in the basement from me for Christmas (which we bought on a Black Friday Sale and were planning to get anyway:), and he promised to build me a pseudo dry bar in the basement for my Christmas present.  (The bar is a work in progress that was going to be completed over Christmas break...but then other things came up.  We'll be tackling the dry bar in the very near future, and I'll post pictures, of course.)  I thought it would be fun to round up a few items that have caught my eye while online browsing.

Here goes:
Pottery Barn Teen

I just love this sweet embroidered 'S' pillow from Pottery Barn Teen.  I'd love to see it in one of the kiddos' rooms or on a small chair.  I originally wanted the 'h' and 'l' versions of these pillows for our lou-lou ghost chairs in the front room, but the 'h' was already sold out by the time I discovered them.  I had already thought about DIYing white pillows with simple black letters on them, figuring that a white pillow with a black letter in a size appropriate for a kid's chair would not be available off the shelf.  At 10 inches these would have been exactly what I had dreamed up!!  They also would have set me back $60 for 2, so maybe it's a blessing the 'h' is not available.  Still, I'd take a nice embroidered 's' pillow.  My DIY 'h' and 'l' versions will not be so fancy:)!!

Farmer's Market Basket

In an attempt to reduce the number of plastic containers we use in our kitchen, I've had my eye out on ceramic and glass alternatives.  I've already picked up a nice Pyrex set of containers, but I'd love to get my hands on one of these!  Isn't it adorable?

Walmart
Trampolines are just fun.  I'd love to jump around in our basement with this guy, and it has the added benefit of helping with lymph system circulation!

Drugstore.com

Again, in an attempt to reduce the amount of plastic we use, I'd love to have one of these glass bottles for on the go errand time or yoga time.  They have silicone sleeves on them and are made of thick, medical grade glass.  Our kiddos both have a smaller version of this glass water bottle, and they love them!  They are also on sale, buy one get one 50% off at Drugstore.com right now!

Crate and Barrel

I have long been a fan of the white and black version of this rug, and C&B recently came out with a grey and white version that would be perfect in our master bathroom!  I've got plans to work on some of the details in our master bedroom and bathroom in the near future, and this rug would be a wonderful addition to my master plan!!  I'm thinking a 30" x 50" rug will work out in the space, although I may need to do a little measuring to see if a 4'x6' would work better.

The Hunger Games

I've heard that this book is phenomenal, and I'd love to read it once I finish up Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which is our neighborhood's book club pick for the month.

Amazon

This one is totally random.  Here's my explanation: I've never owned a Magic 8 Ball, and I've always wanted one.  That's it.

Amazon

I'd love a couple of these to help organize my crafting supplies.  I love that they have a label tag built in to the basket!

And it wouldn't be fun unless I added a couple big ticket items to my big ol' wish list for the year:

Nimbus Wool Rug 8x10

We've had a similar rug (texture-wise) in our office for over a year now, and I absolutely love how lush it feels, and I think the kids would love playing on this green version in our basement.  The color would be perfect for the blue, green, chocolate brown and white color scheme that we have going on down there, as well.  And while I originally picked out a similar and much less expensive rug from IKEA (Hampen Rug in 5'3"x7'7" (Two of them taped together with carpet tape would result in a 7'7"x10'6" rug.), I'd rather stick to a wool rug versus polypropylene if possible.  If we end up going the IKEA route, we'll do some major airing out in the garage or sun porch before laying that rug in our basement.

And finally, kitchen bar stools:

Pier 1

I'd mentioned way back in the day that I really wanted several of the Elana Banana Counter Stools from World Market.  I still love those stools, but there is the shipping cost to deal with and the fact that I'd want 5 stools and they come in pairs.  Pier 1 just added the Kubu Counter Stool to their line up, and it's a nice option.  I have yet to check it out in person, but online it looks like it might work.

And I should note that I realize that I am crazy for even considering purchasing woven seating of any kind that gets regular use by young children.  Our current backless counter stools have woven tops and have become food and playdoh traps.  I'm telling you, cleaning those things is less than fun.  (Charm used to reach our counter using a Learning Tower like this until recently, when he decided that he's a big boy and can use a stool like the rest of us.  (As a side note, our Learning Tower was one of the best purchases we've made for our kids, aside from the fact that we all stubbed our toes on it from time to time.)  I do have a plan for keeping woven stools nice and clean in the future, and I'd rather not go the wood or pleather route as an interim solution when a woven stool is what I envision for the long haul!

So there you have it, one very full birthday list!  And no complaining that I didn't make a list early enough, Bill:)!!  And, to Lucky and Charm:  I also love dollar store surprises too!:)

Wine Rack Dilemma Solved!

Way back in November, I mentioned in this post that I needed to figure out what to do with our built in wine rack area that had been sitting empty and unused since we moved into this house a year and a half earlier.

Since early December, we've been filling our wine rack with our extra paper towel rolls.  We had been storing our extra paper towels in our mudroom, so this in the kitchen location makes much more sense for us.

We love Viva paper towels with the select-a-size option.  We usually use the smallest piece, so it makes the roll last longer.  They are a bit more expensive than some other brands, but I'm almost always able to buy them on sale at Target, using coupons on top of the sale price.  They are so soft!!

My little helper often helps me fill up our 'paper towel rack' when we run low!

The one thing I wasn't loving about this set up was that it looked like we were storing toilet paper in our kitchen:).  So I picked up an small, inexpensive tension rod from Menards and used some fabric I had on hand to make....

 ...a custom curtain!

So much better!  It was super easy to take a few measurements and sew the cover(s).  Now, we have a practical use for our wine rack, that looks nice too!  Problem solved!

Belated January Colors of the Month: Blue and White

When I think of January, I usually think of cold weather and lots of snow.  Even though we had a mild January in Minnesota this year, I still chose blue and white as the colors of the month because blue is cool and snow is white.

Nothing too exciting went on this month in terms of playing up the whole "snowy weather" theme, but that's okay.  I still wanted to post a few pictures of the way our great room looked this past January anyway:).  I only have 1 month to go (February) until I will have completed a full year of monthly color changes to our great room.  Where has the time gone?

I never posted about a little update we made on our dining room chairs that can be seen in this picture.  Do you see the number '3' on the chair?  It's just an address number that we picked up at Home Depot for about $3.  We centered it on the chair and screwed it in to all 4 of our Lucky Shamrock Blue Chairs.  And by 'we', I mean Bill tackled this project.  He did it months ago.  I think I was running an errand while he watched the kids and put numbers on our chairs.  He's super dad-husband man!:)  I love the fun little detail.  It makes me smile:)!

Where Did January Go?

I have to apologize first for not posting since late December.  I honestly had no idea when I posted my 'December: Colors of the Month' that it would be my last post not just for the last few days of the year, but for the next month that followed. I wish I could write about some sort of really exciting news or an amazing adventure our family went on during my blogging break, but that wasn't the case. This image best sums up my absence:

This image is what my left upper arm looks like as of late.  I wish I could say a freakish DIY accident caused this prominent scar, but that wasn't the case.  My scar is the result of the surgery that took place on the 3rd of January to remove a melanoma from my arm.  Cancer is never a word you want to hear.  Especially when it's being diagnosed in yourself or a loved one.  Especially not when you are in your very early thirties and have 2 young kiddos.

To say the week and a half that followed my diagnosis was terrifying would be a huge understatement.  The day that I received the news that a suspicious mole was actually a melanoma was the same day I met with the plastic surgeon who operated on me 6 days later.  Then I waited for the pathology to come back so we would know how deep and far the melanoma had spread.  The good news was that the melanoma was caught early and the original mole biopsy had removed all of the melanoma cells, which meant that the surgery removing a large section of skin surrounding the melanoma (to ensure all cancer cells and a safety margin surrounding them were taken out) completed my treatment.

I thank God every day that I made an appointment to see my dermatologist in December, and I thank Him for gifting her with the skills to identify a suspicious area on my skin.  For the record, since I was a youngster, I have made annual trips to the dermatologist's office thanks to my my fair and moley:) skin.  I have never been (and will never become) a sun bather.  In fact, as a youth I was not a fan of hot weather at all.  I was an active child, however, and have been an active adult spending countless hours outside playing sports, working in the yard and chasing kiddos!

While the outcome turned out as absolutely best as I could hope for, the experience completely shook me to the core.   It made me consider my own mortality.  It put my focus on improving my health.  It made me realize yet again the importance of family and friends, especially during difficult times!  My mom came and stayed with us for 10 days, and I could not be more grateful that she gave us her time.  When things get really bad, I swear I turn into an 6 year old and just want my mom, my childhood bed, and LeMutt (a childhood stuffed animal).  I appreciated all the emails and texts and cards from family and friends, too.

As with any difficult experience, first you have to get through the ordeal and then you have to figure out how to move forward.  In reflecting on how I was living before my diagnosis, I recognized a few things in no particular order:

1.  While our family is relatively fit, we weren't eating the best.  We had fallen into a rut of eating the same easy to prepare foods over and over again.  We have now challenged ourselves to eat better.  We have made detailed breakfast, lunch and dinner menus for the week so that we have variety in our diets, and we are striving to eat organically whenever possible.  I'd never really considered our food sources prior to my melanoma diagnosis, but now it seems really important to avoid as many chemicals as possible both in our diet and in our environment.

2.  Faith has been missing in our life.  We haven't regularly attended church since we moved to Minnesota 4 years ago.  Faith and prayer is so very important during difficult times, and we have not missed a Sunday mass in the month of January.  It's really important to me now, and I love that our kids are being exposed to our Catholic faith on a more meaningful level.

3. Sleep is so important!  While maintaining our household and this blog, my typical bedtime was between 12-1am.  My wake up call comes every morning between 5:30 and 6am with this call from Charm: "Mommy, where are you?"  I would run around all day long doing projects I really, really enjoyed, but I was wiping myself out without even realizing it.  My goal bedtime is now 10:30pm.  It's amazing how much better I feel the next day when I go to sleep on time!

4. Exercise is beneficial for body and mind!  It's a no brainer, but it's also so easy to prioritize activities ahead of exercise.  This month I've been trying out yoga classes, and will hopefully settle into a nice exercise routine a few times a week.  It is a priority.

5. Sun exposure awareness is crucial.  I was shocked to learn that both my dermatologist and primary care physician (who practice in cities about 30 minutes apart) both had seen an alarming number of melanoma diagnoses in young females in the last two months.  While I do believe there is a genetic component to the disease that places me (and others like me) at higher risk of developing the disease, I can't help but wonder if the environment is playing a big role too.  My experience will have major impacts on how we use sunscreen in our family.  Our kids have never played outside in the sun during the summer without having sunscreen applied.  We have been very, very strict about this and will continue to be.  We've even been putting sunscreen on their faces before we go on walks in January!  As for me, I will never go outside in the summer without a thick layer of sunscreen.  I also have picked up the world's biggest sun hat that has spf infused into the fabric.

6.  My entire family will have regular skin checks from here on out.  We must be diligent at looking for irregularities in our own skin and make regular visits to our dermatologist's office to make sure any issues are caught early.

7.  Too much 'stuff' in a house is really stressful!!  We have too much 'stuff' around here.

Another example is our silverware drawer.  It was overflowing with plastic IKEA forks, spoons and knives.  I replaced those plastic utensils with stainless steel versions.  We don't have nearly as many forks and spoons for the kids as we did before, but we don't need that many!!  Our silverware drawer is organized and we can shut the drawer easily.  Simple changes like that are going on around our house like crazy!!  Simplify and organize.  Simplify and organize!  Our office will be tackled in the near future to address the paper filing issues that we currently have.  Our mudroom is being organized so entering and exiting our home is less stressful and more organized.  I'm taking it one cupboard and one drawer at a time.  If I don't love it and/or don't have a place for it, it's not going to stay in our home!  Our garage sale pile is huge already.  I can hardly wait to see how much we'll have to sell come May!

8.  Blogging takes up tons of time!  I spent hours completing projects, uploading images and writing posts.  And the time that I had spent on the blog will now be used for other things like exercising and sleeping!:)  Also, there are lots of changes going on in our house, and they don't have much to do with home decor, which is mostly what this blog has been about in the past.  Going forward, I will dedicate less time to decor projects than in the past, which means there won't be daily posts anymore.  I need to continue getting solid sleep.  I need to spend time exercising.  I need to focus on spending more quality time with my kids before they head to school.

To wrap things up, this past month has been a perspective altering, priority shifting, faith and character building time for myself and my family.  It's been quite the roller coaster, and I finally feel like were settling back into our new norm.  As for this blog, I'm not sure what the future has in store. Please be patient as I figure it out.  For now, I plan to do a post or two a week in topics relating to home decor, our family life and our new 'healthy' lifestyle.  Check in now and then and leave me a comment if you like what you're reading:)!!

I hope you all had a wonderful start to the New Year!  2012 is going to be great!!

P.S. Please understand that I'm not writing this post to receive pity.  I'm moving forward (but welcome any questions people may have about my experience).  Instead, I'm writing this to encourage others to remember to take care of yourself (especially young parents).  If you have a health concern, get it checked out!  Get enough sleep, eat well and exercise!  Make your body and your health a priority, and don't forget to wear sunscreen!
